Useful certifications and permits:

Food Handler's Permit

This is great to have when you're applying for a job in a grocery store, restaurant, catering company, or anyplace that requires you to handle food. Take the time to get this first, and put it on your resume when you apply for that job!

Red Cross CPR, First Aid

CPR and First Aid, are, of course, always useful to have. Some employers require these certifications (think life guard), and some will give you extra points for having gone out of your way to get certified - even if they don't need you to have it.

Red Cross Babysitting Certification

This course is designed for ages 11-15; another class that will "look good" to future employers.

Washington State Liquor Control Board MAST Permit

There is a permit that the WSLCB requires if you work in a restaurant or establishment that serves alcohol. You must be 18 to apply for a Class 13 servers permit, which allows you to take drink orders, carry alcohol to the table, and pour it at the table. It is required within 60 days of hire; get it now, put it on your resume, and get the job over someone else!

Use this tool if you have a job in mind, but know that you need certification to land the job.
